USAID RTI KCDMS

Under the RTI's Kenya Crops and Dairy Market Systems Activity, Progressive Youth Group PYG038 was awarded an inkind mini-grant to work in activating youth and women involvement in climate smart and conservation agriculture mainly through the passion fruit value chain.

Achievements

The project allowed us set up our nursery focusing on the production of 100,000 fruit and indigenous tree seedlings each year. It brought together numerous nursery operators within the community who bundled up resources including land to ensure the success of the project.

Challenges

The award of this grant found the organization in a state of chaos occasioned both by the challenges of the pandemic and a missing clear link of actions. Some members even misused project resources due to a disconnect in our accounting procedures.

Lessons Learnt

The project provided a strong platform for clearly positioning the group as a leader in youth climate action. By providing multiple occasions for training to members on tree seedlings production, nursery management and related activities it enabled us create a unique organization that morphed into leading the implementation of projects.

Unique Project Deliverable

We were able to set up and manage tree seedling production nurseries with production capacity for at least 100,000 seedlings each year.
